"3-peat" -
Three Premierships in a row |
|
The Lions traveled to
Melbourne as underdogs to take their third premiership against Collingwood. They
had traveled four out of the last five weeks and had lost to Collingwood 3
weeks earlier. After the media galvanising support for the Magpies as the
Victorian Team against the northern invaders, the Lions still had good support
at the Grand Final Parade. The weather on game day was typical of Melbourne with
four seasons in one day. Overcoming all odds the Lions won by fifty points,
20.14.134 to 12.12.84. |

Simon Black
won the Norm Smith Medal for best on the Ground. It was
Leigh Matthews'
fourth Premiership from four starts to add to his four as a player.
A celebratory dinner was held at the Melbourne
Convention Centre.
The next day the Lions took the Premiership cup
to the Brunswick Street Oval, the traditional home of the Fitzroy Lions, to a
crowd of 10,000 persons, some with Lion's memorabilia dating back to pre-war
days and the Lion's last flag in 1944. It was then back to Brisbane for a
celebration at the Gabba. This was followed latter in the week by a parade
through the streets of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Latter their was a civic
reception by the premier. |
