Leinster Province |

History
Leinster is based on the east coast of Ireland which
includes the capital, Dublin. It was the first of
the Provinces to form, on October 13th 1900. It was
very active in setting up the inter Province
Competition.Only five
Leinster counties - Wexford, Kilkenny, Dublin, Louth
and Kildare, were affiliated at the start but
within twelve months all except Longford and
Westmeath had come on board. These two joined up
later. There are now twelve counties.
The booklet at left is part of the
An Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium. It
contains the Leinster players that were picked in
the Team of the Millennium. There are 3 stamps of
Dublin Player, Kevin Heffernan, 3 stamps of Meath
Player, Martin O'Connell and 2 stamps of Laois
Player, Tommy Murphy. The back of the booklet
contains the All-Ireland Championships won by
Leinster Counties. |

Counties
Dublin
Dublin has won 22
All-Ireland Championships, the last being in 1995.

Kevin Heffernan was picked in the An
Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
He played with local club St
Vincents. He won eight Railway Cup medals playing in
the left corner forward position. He captained
Dublin to All-Ireland wins in 1958 and 1963. He used
his great pace and illusive skills to score
regularly.

Kildare
Kildare has won four championships, the last
being in 1928.Laois
Laois has not won any All-Ireland Championships.
It
first entered teams in the All Ireland Championships in
1888 and won its first Leinster Football title in 1889.
It was the only county to have a player picked in the
Team of the Millennium who had not won an All-Ireland
Championship. |

Tommy Murphy was picked in
the An Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
He hailed from Graiguecullen. He
was chosen at the age of 16in the senior county
side. He was a mid-fielder of rare skill. With
Laois he won three successive Leinster titles and
won Railway Cup medals on two occasions.

Louth
Louth has won three
championships, the last being in 1957.
Meath
Meath has won seven
championships, the last being in 1999. |

Martin O'Connell was picked in
the An Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
O'Connell was an attacking wing-back.
He was a member of the All-Ireland winning teams of
1987,88 and 1996. He has also won six "Leinsters", a
record not equaled.

Peter McDermott was nominated
for induction into the GAA Hall of Fame in 2002. He
joins the 15 footballers from the Millennium Team
and the two inductees in 2001.
He was a prolific goal scorer in the
1940s. He won two All-Ireland Medals, and a Railway
Cup medal in 1944. He was also a distinguished
referee.

Offaly
Offaly has won three
championships, the last being in 1982. |

Matt Connor was nominated for
induction into the GAA Hall of Fame in 2002. He
joins the 15 footballers from the Millennium Team
and the two inductees in 2001.
He was a highly respected forward in
the eighties and held the goal scoring record for
five consecutive years from 1980-84.

Wexford
Wexford has won five
championships, the last being in 1918.
Other Leinster Counties of Carlow,
Kilkenny, Longford, Westmeath and Wicklow have not been
successful in the All-Ireland Football Championships. |
