Tasmania |
Launceston Football Club in Northern Tasmania played
the first organised game in 1875. The next year saw games played in Southern
Tasmania and 1879 saw the formation of the Southern Tasmania Football
Association. 1883 saw the first North v South game and in 1884 saw the first
signalling of scores by the waving of flags.
The local scene has always suffered by the
draining of players to the VFL/AFL and the continual infighting between the
North, North West and South. In 1987 the first truly statewide competition was
played with teams from all areas. Unfortunately for the 2001 season the league
fell apart with the southern teams going back to the Southern Football League
and the northern teams going back to the NWFU and NTFA.
North Hobart Football ground was the League
headquarters. Five AFL/VFL games have been played there. One game was played in
1952 as a promotion and 4 games were played in 1991-92 when Fitzroy was
canvassing the possibility of playing matches there to help their survival. In
2001 Hawthorn played a fixture at York Park in Launceston which was well
attended and with recent improvements to the ground the sight of AFL teams may
become a more common event. |

In 2001 Tasmania entered a team in the VFL
competition to join their team in the TAC Under 18 competition.
The TAC Cup Under 18 team came to an end after the 2002 season.
St Kilda also joined Hawthorn in York Park Games in season
2003. With the redevelopment of Bellerive games will also be played in Southern
Tasmania in 2005. |

The above
cover was posted in Hobart from the TANFL in 1963. It was addressed to Bertram
Bros, makers of medallions. (Now owned by
Nichol Industries). Perhaps it was the
order for the William Leitch Medal, the TANFLs Best and Fairest.
Tasmanian Team of the Century
On the 25th June 2004 at the Wrest Point Casino,
the Tasmanian Team of the Century was named.
A Commemorative
Cover
was released by First Class Collectables.
