The Gabba |

The Bears initial franking
machine was from Woolloongabba ("Gabba") so it seems that at least initially
they intended to make Brisbane their home.
Upon moving back to Brisbane their mail
facilities were based at the Coorparoo Distribution Centre as the Gabba post
office had moved further away. The image shows their prepaid impression.

The move
back to Brisbane corresponded with increased success both on and off the field.
The stage 1 redevelopment of the Gabba with the removal of the greyhound tract
and the building of team facilities meant the Bears suddenly had the best
facilities in the AFL. Stage 2 saw the building of the Northern Stand Complex
and the installation of lights to increase the ground capacity to 24,000 and the
ability to stage night matches. The next stage was the development of the
Eastern end and finally after the granting of Olympic Soccer matches to the
Gabba the Southern side was developed to give a capacity of 37,000 by the start
of the 2000 season. This was beyond the Bears wildest dreams while based at
Carrara. |

The
Centenary of the AFL saw a special commemorative postmark (PMP 642) to coincide
with the Centenary Stamp Issue. It was obtainable from the Brisbane GPO and was
launched with Michael Voss, an employee of Australia Post, who latter in 1996
won the Bears first Brownlow medal, the highest award in the AFL. Voss,
twice the Bears Best and Fairest, shared the Brownlow with Essendon's James Hird.
Voss has been appointed joint Captain since the 1997 season along with
Alaistar Lynch. The Postmark on cover with the Bears Stamps is shown
above. It was withdrawn on the 6th October 1996. Havilah Enterprises
