"Showdown"  Adelaide 6 v Port Adelaide 11

The clash between the Crows, the silvertails and newcomers formed to keep Port out of the AFL and the Power, the workers club with 127 years of tradition, had been eagerly awaited in Adelaide since the announcement that Port had gained the AFL licence left vacant by the merger of the Lions and the Bears.

Malcolm Blight, the Crows coach and former SANFL player with Woodville, had declared that life in Adelaide would be intolerable if the Crows lost. The Crows were heavily favoured but the unthinkable happened, Port won by 11 points having controlled the match from the outset.

The game was celebrated with the release of a two cover set limited to 50 sets. They were cancelled with the Football Park Permanent Pictorial Postmark (PMP 565) and cover 1 is  shown below. Cover 2

1997 Showdown 1

The Crows were able to win back some pride in Showdown II when they won a game that the Power dominated, by coming back in the last quarter to win by 7 points.

The game was celebrated with the release of a two cover set limited to 50 sets. They were cancelled with the Football Park Permanent Pictorial Postmark (PMP 565) and cover 1 is shown below. Cover 2

1997 Showdown 2

1998 saw the Showdown being shared with Port Adelaide winning the first game by 9 points but the Crows inflicted a heavy defeat on the Power in the second game winning by 74 points.

Both games were celebrated with a pair of commemorative covers. 50 sets of covers were produced. Showdown Three covers were cancelled with a special showdown meter. Cover 1 is shown below. Cover 2.

1998 Showdown 3

The Showdown Four covers were cancelled with the West Lakes Pictorial Postmark. (PMP 565). Cover 1 is shown below. Cover 2.

1998 Showdown 4

1999 saw the Showdown being again shared with Adelaide winning the first game by 28 points but the power, making a late run for the final eight, inflicted a defeat on the Crows in the second game winning by 24 points.

Both games were celebrated with a pair of commemorative covers, 50 sets being produced for each game.

The two Showdown 5 covers were cancelled with the West Lakes Pictorial Postmark. (PMP 565).  The event was shared with the 25th Anniversary of Football Park. Cover 1 and Cover 2.

The 2000 showdown games were again shared with the Crows winning the first by 7 points and the Power winning the second by 47 points.

2001 Showdown X

For the first time in 2001 the series was won two nil rather than drawn. Port Adelaide was the successful team.

The initial game of 2002 saw Port come from behind to snatch victory.

2002 Showdown XI

Port Adelaide won their 5th Showdown in a row over  the Adelaide Crows in Showdown XII at Football Park on 18th August 2002. The final scores were Power 12.12.84  to 11.10.76. Two Covers by First Class Collectibles was released to commemorate the event. Cover 2

Port Adelaide won their 6th Showdown in a row over  the Adelaide Crows in Showdown XIII at Football Park on 26th April 2003. The final scores were Power 12.6.78  to 9.12.66. Four Covers by First Class Collectibles was released to commemorate the event. They portrayed Kane Cornes, Chad Cornes, Darryl Waklin & Wayne Carey and Warren Tredrea.

Port Adelaide won their 7th Showdown in a row over  the Adelaide Crows in Showdown XIV at Football Park on 31st August 2003. The final scores were Power 14.10.94 to 12.6.78. Five Covers by First Class Collectibles was released to commemorate the event. They portrayed Andrew McLeod, Simon Goodwin, Dean Brogan, Brett Mongomery and Byron Pickett. Four covers were relased by Stampsoz. They portrayed Peter Burgoyne, Warren Tredrea, Gavin Wanganeen and Byron Pickett.

After seven successive loses, Adelaide defeated Port by 37 points in Showdown XV played at AAMI Stadium on the 8th May 2004. The game also marked Andrew McLeod's 200th AFL Game. Port turned the tables latter in the year winning by 25 points. A Commemorative Cover of the Pstamp of the Birdman  was released by First Class Collectables.

Adelaide defeated Port by 68 points in Showdown XVII played at AAMI Stadium on the 10th April 2005. Commemorative Covers showing Mark Riccuito  and Matthew Primus were released by First Class Collectables.

Adelaide defeated Port by 7 points in Showdown XVIII played at AAMI Stadium on the 13th August 2005. Commemorative Covers showing Mark Riccuito and Gavin Wanganeen were released by First Class Collectables.

Adelaide defeated Port in the qualifying final played at AAMI Stadium on the 10th September 2005 called the Ultimate Showdown. Commemorative Covers showing Ian Perrie, Mark Riccuito & coach and Pickett v Edwards were released by First Class Collectables.

The Rivalry Round on the 6th May 2006 included Showdown XX won by Adelaide. Local Post covers of Brett Ebert and Graham Johncock were released. On the 27th August 2006 despite their relative ladder positions Port Adelaide defeated Adelaide by 14 points in Showdown XXI. First Class Collectables released two covers portraying Chad Cornes and Steven Salopek.
